As December quickly approaches, I can hardly contain my excitement for delicious Christmas cookies, gorgeous decorations, and HOLIDAY PICTURE BOOKS! I’ve compiled a list of our top 25, countdown to Christmas picture books for December 2022.
Day 1: The Legend of St. Nicholas
The Legend of St. Nicholas is a great way to show children how Santa came to be. We love this wonderful story that shows the beauty of giving and captures the true meaning of Christmas.
Day 2: Christmas Farm
Christmas Farm is a beautiful story of friendship between a young boy, Parker, and his neighbor, Wilma, who is beginning a Christmas farm.
Day 3: Dasher
Dasher by Matt Tavares is the amazing story of how Dasher came to be Santa’s first reindeer and finds his home at the North Pole.
Day 4: Olive, the Other Reindeer
We absolutely love this adorable story about a dog, Olive, who thinks she must be a reindeer as she thinks she hears people sing “Olive, the other reindeer.”
Day 5: The Great Spruce
The Great Spruce is a wonderful tale of how Alec finds a way to save his favorite tree tree with the help of his grandpa.
Day 6: Little Red Sleigh
Little Red Sleigh by Erin Guendelsberger is the perfect Christmas story for kids about determination.
Day 7: The Wild Christmas Reindeer
Teeka couldn’t be more excited to be chosen for the job of training Santa’s reindeer, but working with these wild reindeer turns out to be harder than she thought. The Wild Christmas Reindeer is yet another December favorite picture book by Jan Brett!
Day 8: Pick a Pine Tree
What better way to kick off the decorating fun of Christmastime than with a read aloud of Pick a Pine Tree!
Day 9: An Orange for Frankie
This is one of our favorite Christmas books by Patricia Polacco, and it teaches an important lesson about giving.
Day 10: The Little Reindeer
The Little Reindeer is a calming, mellow story of a little girl who meets a lost reindeer.
Day 11: Silver Packages
Silver Packages is the story of the Santa train set in the Appalachia. This is a wonderful book that helps give perspective to children about needs vs. wants.
Day 12: The Christmas Owl
The Christmas Owl is one of our favorites on the list. This story tells of the owl found in the Rockefeller tree.
Day 13: Gingerbread Baby
Gingerbread Baby is another Jan Brett classic for everyone to love!
Day 14: The Nutcracker
Experience the magic of The Nutcracker at home with this book based on the New York City Ballet’s production.
Day 15: How to Catch an Elf
Children love this hilarious book about an elf on the loose!
Day 16: The Carpenter’s Gift
The Carpenter’s Gift is set near New York City during the Great Depression. Anyone will appreciate the theme of compassion and generosity in this heartwarming story.
Day 17: How the Grinch Stole Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas is another classic to put on the list this December!
Day 18: Home for Christmas
When a misbehaving troll leaves home, he quickly realizes it isn’t all that he thought it would be. The troll wants nothing more than to be home for Christmas.
Day 19: Red and Lulu
In this adorable Christmas tale, the cardinals Red and Lulu are separated when their evergreen tree home is taken. Thankfully, Red and Lulu are destined to find each other again in New York City.
Day 20: Silent Night
This is an outstanding nativity book for children of all ages to enjoy.
Day 21: The Christmas Wish
Children love this story of Anja dreams of becoming one of Santa’s elves. This is the perfect Christmas story to engage children of all ages!
Day 22: The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
Is it really Christmas without the magic of The Polar Express?
Day 23: Room for a Little One
Room for a Little One is the perfect nativity story for children to enjoy.
Day 24: The Night Before Christmas
Of course, we can’t forget the classic The Night Before Christmas.
Day 25: Christmas Day in the Morning
Christmas Day in the Morning is a beautiful story to help little ones understand the true meaning of Christmas.
